Week 6 – Rushing & Pant Pockets
Coach’s Corner: Things to Think About!
Rushing:
Up to two (2) players may rush the quarterback and must line up 7 yards off the line of scrimmage, identify themselves by raising a hand, and rush immediately at the snap (no delayed rush). Players not rushing may defend the line. A rush is legal by the identified rusher(s) or from anywhere on the field after a handoff, pitch, or backward pass. Rushers may attempt to block a pass, but any contact with the QB (unless incidental) will result in a roughing the passer penalty. Illegal rushes or encroachment will result in 5 yards and a first down. Teams are never required to rush, even with the 7-second clock.
Pockets:
Players are strongly encouraged to wear FGS shorts (no pockets). If other pants are worn, all pockets must be taped or zipped closed. Wearing FGS shorts over sweatpants is allowed and recommended. Games will not be delayed for pocket issues, and coaches/players are responsible for bringing tape.
Passing:
Each play allows one forward pass, which must be thrown from behind the line of scrimmage and released before crossing it. Unlimited backward passes are allowed behind the line. There is no intentional grounding. Any forward pass that does not cross the line of scrimmage is illegal unless touched by a defender. Shovel passes are legal as long as they are forward, thrown from behind the line, and received beyond the line of scrimmage.
